Miller Yezerski Gallery Press Release
April 13, 2017
April 21st - May 23rd, 2017
We are pleased to announce Sun Movements, introducing CK Aderem in his first exhibition with Miller Yezerski Gallery. There will be a reception on Friday, April 21, 5 - 8 pm.
CK Aderem's thickly layered oil paintings form abstract landscapes teeming with life. His energetic brushstrokes seem to be born from the canvas rather than placed by the artist, in conversation with a distinct horizon line. The curves and angles of his mark-making give these creamy smears an organic quality--they emerge from the topography of each piece like creatures from a primordial sea.
Aderem accepts the unpredictability of his medium, influenced by painters like Frank Auerbach, Philip Guston, and Howard Hodgkin, who embrace the unplanned, and approach process without reservation. His improvisational layering of candied saturation, muted pastels, and bold darks in varying widths create a flat background and writhing foreground. This manipulation of light, color, and line gives the illusion of planar depth with carefully balanced value and tone.
Aderem sees these streaks of color as characters in communication, his paintings setting a scene scored with action and reaction. While pieces like "Doing and Undoing" highlight quiet, meditative moments, works like "Mad, Sick, Blind King" are brutal and explosive, its personalities bursting through the seams of the painting in quick, forceful motions. Each piece informs the next, continuing a visual narrative told through an abstracted language.
CK Aderem is a Massachusetts-based painter who received his MFA from Boston University and his BFA from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. His work has been featured in galleries locally and internationally.
